Organic coffee is grown according to organic farming principals, standards and methods without the use of pesticides.
There are generally three types of organic coffee certifications which are Organic, Shade Grown and Fair Trade.
The primary producer and exporter of organic coffee is South America. Ethiopia is also a major producer of organic coffee worldwide.
Organic coffee must pass a series of rigorous certification tests and must meet strict criteria. Firstly, it must be grown on land without synthetic pesticides or other prohibited and/or banned substances for 3 years. Secondly, a sufficient buffer period between the organic coffee and the closest traditional crop must be recorded and maintained. Thirdly, a sustainable crop rotation plan must be implemented to prevent erosion and the depletion of the soils nutrients, and the control for pests.
Organic coffee is great on the environment as it stimulates nature’s defence system to control disease and pests normally controlled by pesticides and chemicals.
